Clean memoQ translation memories

memoQ TMs are workhorses that pick up cruft fast — especially after namespace-flavoured TMX exports and X-translate rounds. Export the TM to TMX and clean it here without touching your memoQ project.

━━ the problem

namespace exports smuggle markup into segments

memoQ's namespaced TMX export is a frequent offender for stringifying inline-tag elements into the source/target text body — closing tags with attributes that are never valid XML. The engine detects this exact signature and routes it to a 'suspect markup' tab.

X-translate and pre-translation multiply variants

Every X-translate and machine-pretranslate pass can add another variant of the same source. The TM balloons and the 'most confident' match becomes a coin-flip. Cross-variant dedup with a chosen winner fixes it.

placeholder and tag mismatches slip through QA

When a target's {placeholder} count or tag count doesn't match the source, that unit is a silent landmine for future segments. Flag placeholder-mismatch units as their own category instead of shipping them into new work.

━━ how TM Cleaner handles it

Drop the exported TMX in, review the projected reduction and the suspect-markup / duplicate / junk samples, then download the cleaned TM. Typical memoQ exports come out 35–55% smaller.

━━ frequently asked

how do I export a TM from memoQ to TMX?+

in memoQ, go to Resource Console → Translation memories, select the TM, and choose Export → TMX. Upload the resulting .tmx here. the cleaned output re-imports the same way.

will cleaning break my memoQ inline tags?+

no. genuine, well-formed inline tags on kept segments are preserved untouched. only segments whose ENTIRE body is markup, or memoQ's invalid stringified closing tags, are flagged — and even then you can choose to keep them.

can I clean several memoQ TMs at once?+

the self-serve flow is one TMX at a time today; multi-file batch cleaning with cross-file dedup is on the roadmap and available to enterprise now via the contact page.
